If you are going to collaborate and share with others, it is IMPORTANT to do so in a common format.  While Microsoft Office is a well known standard it can be expensive to own and update (which is what MS wants you to do!).

To these ends a number of individuals, Non-Profits and Governmental Agencies are turning towards OpenSoftware alternatives which are generally FREE and user supported.  One such application that has proven itself and backed by a reputable organization is SUN’s OPEN OFFICE.
